Looking back on 2018 – and forward to 2019: the Year towards Zero Waste

In Energy & Environment, News, Resource Recovery by Astrid Seegers

ReCirc would like to take a little time to look back at what we’ve learned during the past year…and give an outlook on what is to come!

It is only a little over a year ago that ReCirc saw its launch during the official signing ceremony in Amsterdam on December 15, 2017: http://hollandinnovation.sg/resource-recovery-2/

The cluster of signing parties set out toexplore and realize circular solutions in the field of sludge, waste processing and resource recovery solutions, both in Singapore and The Netherlands.”

As the next step, in April of 2018, we organized an Inception Mission to Singapore with members of ReCirc’s Steering Committee, which led to a refinement of ReCirc’s strategic focus to
“providing integrated, sustainable zero waste solutions with a specific interest in Resource Recovery from:

  • Incinerated Bottom Ash and Fly Ash
  • Plastic Waste Upcycling
  • Resource Recovery from Used Water and Sludge
  • Food Waste Systems”

Subsequently, ReCirc saw its formal introduction to Singapore during Singapore International Water Week, the Clean Enviro Summit from July 8 – 12 and the well-attended Resource Recovery workshop on July 13.

The resulting report you may request via sending an email to: sin-ia@minbuza.nl

Furthermore, ReCirc attended the Amsterdam International Water Week Summit on November 15 2018.

In the following week, we witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Singapore and The Netherlands, addressing extended collaboration on the circular economy, climate change, pollution prevention and control and integrated water resource management. The enforcement of its activities by a government-to-government agreement such as the MoU allows ReCirc to continue its ambitious planning for the future.

Next to these successful events and milestones, there is also good news on the business side; the first multi-stakeholder collaboration and projects have started, including key-stakeholders like JTC and PUB.

This gives us ample space in 2019 to further realize our goals and ambitions. Amongst others, we will:

  • Engage in mapping sessions per each one of ReCirc’s abovementioned sub-goals, leading to a specific roadmap and activities per sub-goal.
  • On the integrated overarching solution, we will continue to develop its structure, where learnings and results of all sub-goals may feed back into.
  • Contribute to the Amsterdam International Week in November 2019;
  • We are starting our preparations for Singapore International Water Week in 2020 during its spotlight event in June of 2019.

In short, the events till date and the activities to come are stepping-stones towards providing solutions by joining forces and capabilities to provide sustainable and cost effective solutions for closing the waste loop in Singapore and the region.

We look forward to deepening our collaboration with you in 2019, the Year Towards Zero Waste!
